The person behind

The Digital CMO

—I’m Johanna Courtney, The Digital CMO

I help founders and small teams work out what to say, where to say it, and how to turn attention into real enquiries. No fluff. No faff. Just useful work that gets results.

I’m an active member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and I care about strategy that serves real people. I’m level-headed, proactive and calm under pressure, with a knack for shaping messages that change minds.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve helped clients across B2B, B2C and B2B2C build and launch brands, products and campaigns. From tech start-ups and scale-ups to local businesses and established names.

I bring senior marketing thinking without being afraid to get hands-on. That means defining audiences and positioning, building go-to-market plans, shaping social strategy, pitching to VCs, writing the copy and seeing the day-to-day through.

Running has shaped how I work. I’ve completed eight marathons, which means early alarms, long miles and showing up when it’s hard. I bring the same grit to client work: set a target, make a plan, keep the pace, finish strong.

Based in the UK. Coffee before dawn runs. Always cheering for the underdog. I work best with brands and people I believe in. If that sounds like you, let’s talk.

Media & speaking

I am the protagonist of Heartbeat VR, an animated VR documentary about my first miscarriage. It won Best Narrative at the Raindance Film Festival Immersive Awards in 2024 and the Audience Award at ART*VR in Prague in 2024, and has since toured internationally.

I’ve spoken about the work and its themes on panels at the Raindance Immersive Summit in London and Zip-Scene Conference at ART*VR in Prague, exploring female narratives, virtual motherhood and how we talk about discomfort.

Speaking at Raindance Immersive

Dee Harvey (Director, Heartbeat) and Johanna Courtney (protagonist, Heartbeat) speaking on the Crafting Female Narratives panel, Raindance Immersive Summit, 19 June 2024.

I’m a vocal advocate for the childless-not-by-choice community and for breaking the silence around miscarriage. Telling difficult stories with care is part of who I am, and it’s why my content connects.

The story matters. The words matter. The follow-through matters too.

—Before we talk

Heartbeat is a huge part of my story, but it also says a lot about how I work.

I care about getting the message right, treating people with respect and creating content that feels human. Whether I’m writing a white paper, shaping a campaign, creating UGC, planning social content or helping a founder get clearer on their message, the aim is always the same: make it useful, honest and easy to connect with.

If you need someone who can bring clear thinking, care and proper graft to the work, let’s talk.
